The Central and Eastern European Academy of Oncology (CEEAO) is delighted to announce a new grant opportunity aimed at empowering young researchers in the field of oncology across Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and Central Asia. We invite colleagues involved in oncological patient care or cancer research to submit their innovative proposals.

About the CEEAO

Established in 2019 by Prof. Dr. Miklós Kásler, then Minister of Human Resources of Hungary, the Central and Eastern European Academy of Oncology (CEEAO) aims to foster a collaborative network of oncology professionals across a region encompassing over 500 million people. Our mission is to improve oncology outcomes by supporting research, education, and clinical practice.

Objective of the Grant

This grant aims to empower young researchers by providing resources and support for pioneering research projects. Specifically, the grant intends to:

  • Support Innovative Research: Focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of rare tumors.
  • Encourage Interdisciplinary Approaches: Integrate knowledge from various scientific and medical disciplines to address complex oncological challenges.
  • Foster the Implementation of Novel Technologies: Incorporate digital pathology, molecular diagnostics, and AI-driven solutions into mainstream oncology practices.

By focusing on these areas, the grant seeks to contribute to the global understanding of rare tumors, presenting significant challenges to patients and healthcare systems alike.

  • 1st Place: 3 million HUF
  • 2nd Place: 2 million HUF
  • 3rd Place: 1 million HUF

Eligibility Criteria

This grant is open to young researchers who meet the following criteria:

  • Age Limit: Under 35 years at the time of the application deadline.
  • Academic and Professional Background: Open to medical students, residents, and early-career researchers engaged in oncology-related research or clinical practice.
  • Research Focus: Projects directly related to oncology, with a preference for those addressing rare tumors or novel diagnostic and therapeutic methods.
  • Affiliation: Must be affiliated with an accredited academic or research institution within Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, or Central Asia.

Applicants must submit official documentation to verify their eligibility, such as proof of age, academic credentials, and a letter of support from their institution.

Scope of the Grant

Eligible projects should align with one or more of the following research areas:

  • New Diagnostic Techniques: Developing or validating methods for early detection and diagnosis of rare tumors.
  • Innovative Therapies: Investigating new treatment modalities, including personalized medicine approaches, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies.
  • Implementation Science: Focusing on translating research findings into clinical practice and addressing barriers to adopting new technologies or treatments in oncology.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Involving collaboration between fields like genomics, bioinformatics, and clinical oncology to create integrated cancer treatment solutions.

Projects should be innovative, feasible, and have the potential for significant impact on patient outcomes. Applicants are encouraged to present clear, measurable goals and a well-defined methodology.

Submission Requirements

Applicants must provide the following materials:

  1. Completed Application Form: Provided by the CEEAO.
  2. Project Proposal: Detailed description including objectives, hypotheses, methodologies, expected outcomes, and clinical implications (max 5,000 words).
  3. Budget Outline: Clear and realistic budget detailing fund allocation.
  4. Timeline: Proposed timeline with key milestones and deliverables.
  5. Curriculum Vitae: Highlighting academic and professional achievements.
  6. Letters of Recommendation: Two letters from academic or professional mentors.
  7. Institutional Support Letter: Confirming institutional support and access to necessary resources.

Supplementary materials (optional) such as publications or visual aids may be included (max 10 pages or 20 MB).

All materials must be in English, with certified translations provided for documents not originally in English.

Evaluation Criteria

A multidisciplinary selection committee will evaluate applications based on:

  • Scientific Merit
  • Innovation
  • Feasibility
  • Potential Impact on Clinical Practice
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration

Evaluation Phases:

  1. Preliminary Review: Screening for eligibility and completeness.
  2. Technical and Scientific Review: Assessing scientific merit and innovation.
  3. Budgetary and Ethical Review: Scrutinizing budget appropriateness and ethical considerations.
  4. Final Selection: Ranking and selection of top projects for funding.

Decision Announcement: Successful applicants will be notified by January 15, 2025. The decision is final, and no appeals will be entertained.

  • Data Protection: Compliance with GDPR and relevant data protection laws.
  • Legal and Ethical Compliance: Applicants are responsible for ensuring their proposals comply with all applicable laws and ethical standards, including intellectual property laws.
  • Acknowledgment: Funded projects must acknowledge CEEAO’s support in all resulting publications or presentations.

Feedback and Continuous Improvement

  • Progress Reports: Successful applicants must submit periodic progress reports and a final report upon project completion.
  • Applicant Feedback: Feedback from all applicants is encouraged to refine future grant rounds. Please submit feedback within 2-5 days after the grant announcement.
