“Innovation and Imaging in the Future of Oncology” – Highlights from the Congress of the Central and Eastern European Academy of Oncology

On September 27, 2024, our professional community reached a new milestone. The Congress of the Central and Eastern European Academy of Oncology focused on the key role of modern oncological imaging diagnostics. Scientific and technological advancements in imaging have led to unprecedented progress, and this online conference highlighted the opportunities within the Central and Eastern European region under the outstanding chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Gabriella Liszkay and Dr. Attila Marcell Szász.

Presenting the Current and Future State of Diagnostic Imaging

At the congress, representatives from several countries shared their experiences. Dr. Ferenc Vicko, a health official from Serbia, opened the presentations by introducing his country’s practices in imaging diagnostics. Following him, Eszter Bors from Bristol provided insights into the challenges of measuring the efficacy of innovative therapies. Prof. Dr. Miklós Szócska’s presentation on data-driven healthcare captivated the audience, underscoring how artificial intelligence is transforming diagnostics and therapy from mere vision to an increasingly tangible reality.

PET CT and PET MR: New Weapons in Diagnostics

Dr. Sándor Czibor, director of the Pozitron PET Center, delivered a goundbreaking presentation on the role of PET CT and PET MR imaging. These techniques offer a more accurate diagnosis by enabling the distinction between malignant and benign tissues. The widespread use of PET diagnostics is becoming an integral part of modern oncological practice, continually opening new possibilities in medical interventions.

International Perspectives and Collaborations

One of the highlights of the congress was a series of presentations that underscored the potential for regional collaboration. Prof. Dr. Rema Gvamichava from Georgia and Dr. Petr Shegai from Russia shared valuable, locally specific insights that provide a strong foundation for future partnerships. Joining from New York, Zhandos Amankulov represented Kazakhstan, discussing the unique oncological challenges and development opportunities of his country, thereby contributing to a deeper understanding of the global context of diagnostic practices.

The Semmelweis University Example: Expanding the Boundaries of Diagnostics

The event concluded with a remarkable presentation by Prof. Dr. Pál Maurovich Horvát, clinical director of Semmelweis University. His talk, enriched with striking visuals, demonstrated that the work being done in imaging at Semmelweis University is exemplary not only for Hungary but for the entire region.

Inspiring Discussions

After the thought-provoking presentations, participants engaged in a lively discussion, reflecting on the key messages of the congress and the future of oncological diagnostics. The day ended with an informal dinner where further steps toward collaboration were also discussed.
